A very nice Georgian mahogany veneered sarcophagus shaped tea caddy in the Chippendale style. Original brass lock with small diamond shaped escutcheon and with a new old style key made to work in it.
A classic Georgian brass carrying handle on top. The lid lifts to reveal an interior of three sections. These would have originally had metal tea containers that would have slotted between the timber dividers. The interior of the lid has the original red velvet lining with a gold coloured trim around the outside. It sits on four steped ogee feet.
Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. In overall excellent condition and without any restoration to the veneer. Nice colour and patination.
Measurements: 24 cm wide, 12.5 cm deep and 16 cm high.

18th Century sarcophagus shaped Tea Caddy with Key, circa 1780

  • Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. Occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
