A good looking mid-18th century oak bible box with an internal candle box, its original ironwork and original lock and key.
Whoever made it took their time to use dovetail joints, instead of knocking it together with iron nails. It has also managed to get through the Victorian era, without having geometric patterns carved into it, like so many. It has a built in candle box, which is a nice touch. The lock and key appear to be original and it still work well, if you press the staple in well, while turning the key. The iron work is all original, with lovely patination. There is an age related shrinkage crack in the base and also some woodworm damage to the underside of the base. This looks to be quite old but I've nevertheless treated it to be on the safe side.
Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. Is in very good original condition with good colour and nice patination.
Measurements: 53 cm wide, 33 cm deep and 22cm high.

  • Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. Occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
