A very appealing Victorian burr walnut veneered vanity box, fitted with various glass bottles and containers with silver plated tops, within a green velvet lined case. Removable and reversible mirror that fits within the hinged top, and a pop out green silk and velvet lined drawer for your diamond necklaces and tiara. The top has a central rectangular vacant mother of pearl cartouche, matching the escutcheon. It lifts via two brass hinges to reveal its glorious contents. One of the taller jars has had part of its rim nibbled away, although this cannot be seen when it has its lid on. Likewise, the long rectangular glass container has part of its rim missing which again can't be noticed with the lid on. The remaining containers are in pretty much great condition, albeit a few slight dings in a few of the silver plated tops (see photos). The brass lock is original but there is no longer a key. It has a tray to the front containing some of the jars and containers and also couple of button hooks and a strange twisty corkscrew thing, of which I'm sure had an essential purpose, but haven't as yet come to any realistic conclusion as to what it was! The tray lifts out via two brass handles, in order to access a storage area beneath. There is a button between the two hinges at the back. When this is pressed, it releases the drawer, that springs out from the front of the base. The inside of the top has a mirror, lined with gathered green velvet on its reverse side. It unclips by pressing a button located on the inside of the top. It can then be turned around and clipped back into place, giving you the option of either having the velvet lining, or the mirror giving you the illusion of having double the amount of bottles and jars. There is also a hidden folder, perhaps for keeping your secret love letters. The former owner of this apparently didn't have any, as it looks to have never been used. The green hessian lining to the base has been replaced.Sympathetically cleaned and the top replenished with French polish. Has been re-waxed and polished. It has had a few minor repairs to the veneer, a few age related shrinkage cracks which appear quite stable. Fully restored and again in excellent antique condition. Lovely colour and patination to the burr walnut.Measurements: 30 cm wide, 22.5 cm deep and just under 18 cm high.
Victorian fully fitted Burr Walnut Vanity Box, circa 1860
Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. Occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please don’t use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the waxed surface.
